Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County —Tuesday, September 2, 2025-In a landmark move to strengthen governance and community leadership, 103 chiefs from across Gbarpolu County have been officially appointed.
The letters of appointment were signed by Internal Affairs Minister F. Sakila Nyumalin, Sr. and issued by the Deputy Minister for Operations, Hon. Selena Polson Mappy.
The cohort includes General Town Chiefs, Clan Chiefs, and Paramount Chiefs who have been approved to lead with vision and dedication. The appointments were issued in Bopolu City on September 2, 2025, following a similar issuance in Gbarma on September 1, 2025.
During the issuance of the letters, Deputy Minister Mappy stated that the chiefs’ appointments align with Liberia’s Local Government Act. She noted that the documents reference the Local Government Act of 2018, Section 2.15y, and emphasize duties performed with commitment, loyalty, selflessness, and integrity.
Madam Mappy explained that although elections for chiefs were anticipated, the government’s current financial constraints necessitated this appointment process under the Act, empowering the Internal Affairs Minister to issue letters of appointment.
She urged continuity of service until funds became available for elections and warned that appointment letters could be revoked if chiefs fail to serve their communities effectively.
The Deputy Minister also used the event to urge the chiefs to establish an Advisory Council in line with the Local Government Act.
She affirmed that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the broader Local Government Act framework guide the government’s approach, noting that this exercise is taking place across Liberia’s fifteen counties.
Administrative oversight for the event was provided by Gbarpolu County Administrative Officer Mr. James Kpoto Scott, who highlighted wide-ranging involvement of citizens throughout Gbarpolu County to strengthen unity and local governance.
Mr. Scott thanked the Minister and urged the new appointees to collaborate within their respective jurisdictions.
Paramount Chief George Sumo speaking, on behalf of his colleagues extended gratitude to the President through the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
He noted that the appointment letters will help convey the chiefs’ messages to the President and urged that staff in the offices of General Town Chiefs, Clan Chiefs, and Paramount Chiefs be placed on payroll.
The ceremony signaled a renewed era of county and local leadership aimed at resolving disputes, and fostering community cohesion across the county.
