    Police in Grand Kru County Initiate Construction of Female Cell Amidst Limited Prison Facility

    Grand Kru County, Barclayville City-Tuesday, February 18, 2025-Authorities of the Liberia National Police, Grand Kru Detachment have begun the construction of a female cell.

    The initiative comes in response to a growing concern regarding the lack of appropriate holding spaces for female inmates in Grand Kru County, which has long been a challenge for local law enforcement.

    The decision to build a female cell followed a recent meeting attended by local police officials, who are committed to improving the justice system in the County.

    ACP. Clement Barllat, the Commander of the Grand Kru Police Detachment said that the self-initiative project when completed will is provide a safe and secure environment for women who are in custody, ensuring that they are treated with dignity and respect while they await trial or serve their sentences.

    Our Reporter quotes Police authorities, that the absence of a prison facility in the County which poses a significant challenges in managing both male and female detainees effectively, noting that women have been held in inadequate and unsuitable conditions, raising serious concerns about their safety and well-being.

    The new facility is expected to address these shortcomings, offering better accommodations and resources tailored to the needs of female inmates.

    “This project is a milestone for our county and reflects our commitment to upholding the rights of all individuals, regardless of gender,” said ACP Clement Barllat during an exclusive interview. “We understand that women in detention face unique challenges, and it is our responsibility to ensure they have access to facilities that cater to their specific needs.”

    Meanwhile, citizens and residents have hailed the project as a positive step towards justice reform in Grand Kru County. “This is an important development for our county,” one of the citizens Dreams Nagbe, expressed his excitement. “It demonstrates recognition of the rights of women and a commitment to improving our legal system. We hope that this initiative will also encourage further investment in our correctional facilities overall.”

    The move has been welcomed by many in Grand Kru, who are hopeful that this construction will lead to additional improvements in the county’s justice infrastructure, ultimately paving the way for a more equitable and humane system for all citizens.
