Capitol Hill – Thursday, May 22, 2025 – River Gee County Electoral district 1, Representative, Alexander Pour, has proposed a bill to create a community college in the county, with the goal of improving educational opportunities and fostering development in southeastern Liberia.
The proposed legislation, named “An Act to Establish the River Gee County Community College,” has been presented to the 55th National Legislature and assigned to the joint committees on Education, Judiciary, and Ways, Means, and Finance for examination. The committees are anticipated to provide their findings within two weeks.
“The initiative aims to make education more accessible locally,” Rep. Pour stated, noting that the college would offer degree programs that meet regional demands, thereby helping to decrease youth outmigration in search of higher education and promoting job creation and innovation within the county.
The establishment of a community college is viewed as a strategic step toward empowering the local community through education.
Should the bill be approved, River Gee would join other counties that have established similar institutions to enhance access to higher education throughout Liberia.
River Gee is a county in the southern portion of Liberia. One of the 15 counties that constitute the first-level of administrative divisions in the nation. The county has ten administrative, four statutory and three political districts.
