    RREA Breaks Ground for Landmark Solar-Battery Generated Electricity Project In Lofa

    Bakuma, Lofa County-Sunday, October 5, 2025-The Government of Liberia breaks Ground for Landmark Solar and Battery Storage Project in Lofa County.

    The Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), with World Bank support on Saturday, October 4, 2025 launched a state-of-the-art hybrid energy system in Voinjama district, Lofa County.

    The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Bakuma Town, Voinjama district.

    The project will integrate a 4.0 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) array with a substantial 9.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to ensure 24/7 power for the designated communities including the provincial capital of Voinjama, Foya, Kolahun, Massabolahun and Bakuma town itself; where the solar power plant is being constructed. In addition, all communities located between these main towns- long plagued by limited or no access to electricity.

    Already installed solar panel component of the hybrid power generation system.

    The project is financed by the World Bank under the Liberia Renewable Energy Access Project (LIRENAP) and the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project II (LESSAP II), the project is expected to transform electricity access across Lofa County.

    Once completed, the system will deliver modern, reliable, and sustainable power to thousands of residents in across Lofa County.

    Information wise, the Government of Liberia, through the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), is implementing a landmark renewable energy initiative in Lofa County with financing from the World Bank under the Liberia Renewable Energy Access Project (LIRENAP) and the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project II (LESSAP II).

    The project involves the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 4.0 MWp solar PV power plant with a 9.4 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), integrated with a 1.8 MW diesel power plant to form a hybrid mini-grid.

    Officials of government,citizens and partners who graced the groundbreaking event in Bakuma Town.

    In separate remarks, representative from the RREA, the World Bank and several other speakers called on the community members to take proper care of the modern installation which will be completed soon.

    Lofa County Superintendent J. Lavela Massaquoi also appreciated the partners and promised that the community will take ownership of the project.

    The process of installing poles and connecting electric lines has already started in Voinjama district.
