A heavy windstorm has left many residents homeless in Voijama City, Lofa County. The storm disaster occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025 during the evening hour, leaving residents in disarray.
The storm destroyed both private homes and government facilities. Victims of the disaster could be seen in search of dwelling places to pass the night until the next morning.
“As I speak to you my brother, the William Vs. Tubman Junior High school in Vezelia Town was completely damaged as a result of the disaster last night, our students are out of school as we speak”, said a faculty of the school.
Some of the victims are currently stopping with friends and family members. A widow who left from Guinea and came back home to resettle in Liberia was one of the victims.
” I came few days ago and today I experienced this disaster; it is a serious disappointment for me. Imagine I came from Guinea as a widow with my sick mother to live in Liberia, now my entire house is damaged, so I’m calling for help”, Mayamum Kamara lamented.

Amid the disaster, the National Disaster Management Committee in Lofa is yet to make any statement regarding the situation. With limited budget, it is not clear how the victims will receive help from the National Disaster Management Agency. During the fiscal year 2024, the government allocated US$600, 000 for emergency response, but some disaster victims in Lofa complained of not benefiting from the support.
Storm disaster is a regular happening in Lofa County. In February this same year, storm destroyed several buildings in Voinjama, including buildings belonging to the Lofa County’s University. In 2017, Local Voices reported that 500 residents in Kolahun got affected by heavy storm, leaving many of them homeless.
