    Students Celebrate International Day of the Girl Child in Lofa, Plan Liberia Provides Support

    Students celebrate Int'l Day of the Girl Child in Foya City.

    ‎Voinjama City, Lofa County –Wednesday, October 15, 2025-Several students, mostly girls and other stakeholders across Lofa have concluded week-long activities marking the observance of the International Day of the Girl Child (IDG), sponsored by Plan International Liberia.

    ‎The celebration,  brought together girls from three districts — Voinjama, Kolahun, and Foya — was held in two phases and featured series of activities leading up to the grand finale. Activities included radio talk shows, content creation sessions, campus awareness campaigns, girls’ takeover initiatives, and the main celebration program.

    ‎Under the umbrella of the Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) spearheaded by Plan International, the event united girls from several organizations and initiatives such as Plan Alumni Association, SHE LEADS, and Girls Liberia, among others.

    ‎As part of the “Girls Takeover” activity, young girls symbolically assumed leadership positions in various offices, including the Office of the County Superintendent, City Mayor, Police Commander, Women and Children Protection Section, Immigration Commander, CEO, and Hospital Administrator, among others.

    ‎Speaking after her takeover as Superintendent, Blessing Conteh expressed joy and gratitude for the experience. “I felt overwhelmed taking over as Superintendent. It was an eye-opening experience that has motivated me to become a better leader and inspire other girls in my community,” she said.

    ‎Favor Kotee, an aspiring lawyer, also participated in the initiative by serving as the Ministerial Judge during the takeover exercise amongst several others.

    Veronica T. Ngoloe, a 24-year-old woman with a physical disability, took over as Gender Coordinator in Foya City. Speaking to reporters, Veronica expressed both pride and concern. While grateful for the opportunity, she highlighted the lack of essential materials such as stationery, computers, and other logistics at the gender office.

    ‎According to her, this challenge reflects a broader neglect of women in leadership, especially those living with disabilities. “I feel that the government and local authorities are not supporting the gender office because its current coordinator is a woman with a disability. But being disabled doesn’t mean I am not capable. Women and girls with disabilities deserve equal chances to lead,” Veronica emphasized.

    ‎The final celebration took place in Foya City on Tuesday October 14, 2025, bringing together students from various high schools, youth groups and local leaders.

    ‎Delivering the keynote address, Sandell Kamara spoke on both the international theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead”, and the national theme, “I Am a Girl: My Voice, My Power, Building Hope in Crisis.”

    ‎She highlighted several challenges facing girls in Lofa County, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancy, early and forced child marriage, and gender-based violence. Ms. Kamara encouraged girls to remain resilient and focused in the pursuit of their dreams.

    Stakeholders at the event commended Plan International and its partners for their continued support and urged that the IDG activities be maintained as a continuous initiative, rather than a one-day event, to further empower and equip girls for leadership in society.
