GRAND KRU – Two persons narrowly escaped death, while two others are feared dead, while recently making a voyage across Grand Kru County’s Dorbor River, Rural Reporters News Network (RRNN) has learned.

The incident occurred Sunday, 27 October 2024, when the four individuals, a 19-year-old pregnant lady, Precious Kantan, and a 16-year-old, Joanna Targbe, both who are presumed to have drowned, were along with two others (names undisclosed) crossing the deadly Dorbor River from Putu Town to Nyankunpo, Grand Kru County.

An eyewitness revealed that the four individuals were using a floater to cross the dangerous river when the rope attached to the floater cut, causing it to capsize.

“They were four girls that went with those boys for a football game and while coming back the four were on the floater when the rope cut! All four were drowning but they managed to rescue two”, a family source told RRNN.

Some citizens and residents gathered at the site where the incident occurred

The pair presumed dead, 19-year-old Kantan and 16-year-old Targbe are citizens and residents of Nyankunpo Town, Grand Kru County.

Dorbor River poses a major threat to economic growth and the lives of inhabitants of Grand Kru County, especially citizens and residents of Nyankunpo Town, located in Dorbor and Bolloh Statutory Districts, respectively. They have to cross the dangerous river before accessing commercial centers that are in short supply in their communities.

Drowning in Dorbor River is fast becoming a regular occurrence, according to our reporter in Grand Kru County.

Recently, RRNN reported that a 39-year-old, Moses Williams alias ZB, drowned in the Dorbor River under similar circumstances, when the rope attached to the floater was snatched off his hands by a torrential current from the river.

Meanwhile, citizens and residents of Grand Kru County, especially those residing in Bolloh and Dorbor Statutory Districts, have launched an SOS, calling on members of the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus to advocate for funding in the 2025 National Budget to erect a bridge over the Dorbor River.
