Kolahun District, Lofa County – June 14, 2025–A $650.000 River Dam constructed by the Government of Liberia is expected to boos rice production in Lofa County.

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Agriculture officially dedicated the Fagonda River Dam on June 14, 22025, marking a crucial moment in the nation’s quest for food security and self-sufficiency.

The $650,000 agriculture initiative was fully financed by the government and implemented by the Liberia Qiang Shen Group, a Chinese company. The River Dam project is anticipated to enhance year-round rice production on over 250 acres of lowland located in Fangonda town.

Agriculture Minister Alexander Nuetah highlighted the historical significance of the region in rice production, reminiscing about the vibrant agricultural activity of the 1960s when Kolahun served as a hub for rice farming in Liberia. This project is seen as a crucial step to revitalizing that legacy and reaffirming Lofa’s role as a breadbasket for the nation.

Minister Nuetah emphasized that the dam and its accompanying irrigation system are integral part of “Liberians Feed Yourselves” agenda. “Liberians Feed Yourselves” agenda is an ambitious national initiative aimed at reducing rice imports by at least 70% by 2030 while bolstering local production capabilities, the Government of Liberia has said.

“This initiative not only focuses on food security but also aims to enhance livelihoods, creating more job opportunities for our citizens,” said Minister of Agriculture.

Construction of the dam began in early February 2025 and was completed in just 70 working days. The initiative has already garnered local support, with citizens expressing their gratitude towards President Joseph N. Boakai’s commitment to revitalizing the agriculture sector. Many locals attended the ceremony, sharing their excitement about the potential for enhanced employment opportunities.

The dedication event drew a diverse group of government officials, local stakeholders, and development partners, all coming together to celebrate this significant advancement in Liberia’s agricultural landscape. The project not only reinvigorates a historic agricultural site but also sets the stage for a new era of agricultural development in Lofa County.

As Liberia strives towards achieving self-sufficiency in food production, the Fagonda River Dam stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to improving the livelihoods of its citizens and ensuring a sustainable future for the country’s agricultural sector.
