Volunteer Teachers in Kolahun Threaten to Quit if not Employed by December

Kolba City, Kolahun District–In a poignant outcry, volunteer teachers in Kolahun District have voiced their deep dissatisfaction with the government, threatening to cease teaching if they are not employed by December 2025. The volunteer teachers spoke during a mass meeting on November 10, 2025.

The chairman of the volunteer teachers, Mr. Bonason Ngumbu, expressed the overwhelming challenges faced by educators in the region, highlighting the unfulfilled promises made by the Ministry of Education regarding employment.

Speaking to reporters, Ngumbu stated, “We have suffered a lot. This year, the ministry assured us of employment, but here we are, still waiting and facing the harsh realities of life without stable income.” He lamented that despite their dedication and commitment to educating the children of Kolahun, the lack of financial support has left many teachers struggling to make ends meet, including having difficulty paying school fees for their own children.

Ngumbu emphasized the severity of the situation, threatening that if no employment opportunities by December, the volunteer teachers would have no choice but to abandon the classrooms. “We are not joking. We will not teach if we are not employed beginning next month,” he declared firmly.

Kolahun District boasts a significant number of volunteer teachers, who have stepped in to fill the gaps in the education system. These educators have been serving without pay, driven by their commitment to provide quality education, despite the financial hardships they endure. Many are now contemplating returning to farming, hoping that working in the fields may provide a more stable livelihood than teaching without compensation.

The District Education Office has yet to respond to these developments or provide clarity on the employment status of the volunteer teachers. As the end of the year approaches, the urgency of the situation intensifies, leaving both educators and students in a state of uncertainty.

As Kolahun District faces this educational crisis, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of volunteer teaching in the area and the welfare of the students who rely on these dedicated individuals for their education. Community members are hopeful that the government will take swift action to address the issue before the situation escalates further.
