Chengbetee Town, Bolloh District – Grand Kru County| January 8, 2026..An arson incident has been reported following a protest staged by women believed to be from various towns in Upper Bolloh District on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

The women had gathered to protest the murder of a woman in late years. Police said the suspect was later arrested in Nimba Count, and is yet to be returned to the county for trial, something they believe may have triggered the women’s protest.

Preliminary information says the incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. (0800 hours) when the women, coming from various towns in Upper Bolloh District, took over the streets of Chengbetee Town and allegedly set ablaze a shop belonging to Mr. Bobby Kerslah, a 41-year-old man of the Mano tribe from Nimba County.

Eyewitnesses said the angry crowd demanded that the police turn Mr. Kerslah over to them so he could be taken to traditional authorities, while reportedly issued threats against law enforcement officers, including the Police Commander of Buah District, Inspector Darpoe G. Karweah.

Confirming the incident, police said they swiftly responded after receiving information from the community. “Upon receiving information, police officers immediately responded to the scene and found that a shop had already been set ablaze by a group of protesting women,” police said in a preliminary statement.

Police disclosed that officers took photographs and conducted an initial assessment upon arrival. “We have begun a full investigation into the incident and are currently identifying persons of interest who may be connected to the act of arson and the threats made against law enforcement officers,” the police added.

The Liberia National Police strongly condemned the act and warned against mob justice. “The Liberia National Police condemns mob violence and urges citizens to remain calm and allow the justice system to handle all grievances through lawful means,” the statement continued.

Police further emphasized that those found responsible will be held accountable under the law. “No one is above the law, and anyone found responsible for destroying property or inciting violence will be dealt with in keeping with the law,” police warned.

Authorities also assured residents that security in the area has been reinforced to prevent further disturbances. “Security in Chengbetee Town and surrounding communities has been reinforced to prevent further disturbances,” police confirmed.

According to report, no casualties were reported, but the shop was completely damaged by fire, as investigations into the arson and the circumstances surrounding the protest are ongoing.
