Zealakpala Town, Lofa County |March 8, 2026|The commander of the Community Watch Forum in Zealakpala Town, Lofa County, is calling for increased support and protection for members of the forum following a series of alleged attacks on volunteers operating in gold mining communities.
Commander Patrick Mulbah said members of the Community Watch Forum have recently come under attack from individuals in mining areas while carrying out their duties to maintain security in the community.
Speaking to reporter in Zealakpala, Mulbah explained that some miners have developed the habit of confronting community watch members, especially during late hours when the volunteers are conducting patrols.
He recounted a recent incident in which a man allegedly attacked members of the watch forum with a wooden plank after they attempted to arrest him.
Mulbah noted that Zealakpala is experiencing a steady increase in population due to ongoing gold mining activities. However, he disclosed that the town currently has only eight community watch members responsible for maintaining security in the area.
According to him, the situation has made their work increasingly difficult, prompting an urgent appeal to national security authorities and the government to provide protective gear and logistical support to the volunteers.
The appeal comes amid reported attacks on community watch members along the Konia to Bawalazu corridor, raising concerns about the safety of those helping to support community security.
The Community Watch Forum operates as a local support structure to the Liberia National Police, which continues to face manpower and logistical challenges in many rural parts of the country.
