Several remote communities in the Glarro Administrative District of River Gee County are experiencing internet connectivity for the first time following the installation of Starlink-powered internet systems aimed at improving digital access in the region.
Residents of the Liberian-Ivorian border towns of Youbor, Leopard-Town, and Solobloh welcomed the development over the weekend, describing it as a major breakthrough for communities that have long struggled with isolation and limited communication services.
The installation of satellite internet equipment has brought excitement among residents, many of whom say the service could significantly improve communication with family members both within Liberia and abroad.
Community members gathered to witness the activation of the internet systems in their towns.
Glarro Administrative District, located in southeastern River Gee County, remains one of the county’s most difficult areas to access due to poor road conditions and geographical barriers.
The district shares boundaries with neighboring Grand Gedeh County and parts of Ivory Coast.
Much of the district is surrounded by the Cavalla River, which creates major transportation challenges for residents.
Access to several towns often requires crossing rivers and traveling on severely damaged roads, especially during the rainy season.
Residents believe the arrival of internet services could help reduce some of the communication difficulties faced by people living in the isolated border communities.
Many say digital connectivity is becoming increasingly important for education, trade, information sharing, and emergency communication.
Videos shared on Facebook showed residents celebrating as internet equipment was installed in the affected communities.
The footage captured emotional scenes of citizens using internet services for the first time and learning how the systems would operate.
Local representatives involved in the installation process also provided explanations to residents on how the equipment would be maintained and protected to ensure long-term access for the communities.
According to the 2022 Liberia National Population and Housing Census, Glarro Administrative District has a population of 4,470 people.
Residents hope the internet initiative will create new opportunities for students, small businesses, teachers, and young people seeking access to information and online learning resources.
Many citizens see the project as an important step toward bridging the digital divide in some of Liberia’s most remote communities.
Despite the ongoing road and transportation challenges, residents say reliable internet access now offers them a stronger connection to the rest of the country and the wider world.
