Communities Shape Liberia Budget Discussions

The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has launched a nationwide outreach program aimed at giving communities across Liberia a stronger voice in the preparation of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Budget.

The initiative seeks to ensure that ordinary citizens are included in discussions about national development priorities and public spending.

The outreach activities are currently taking place in Grand Gedeh County, where residents, local leaders, youth groups, and community members are gathering to share concerns affecting their daily lives. The exercise began on May 8 and will continue through May 23, 2026.

Under the theme, “Empowering Citizens, Strengthening Accountability: Building Liberia’s Future Through Inclusive Budgeting,” the campaign focuses on encouraging citizens to actively participate in decisions that impact their communities and future development.

Community members are being encouraged to identify pressing needs such as better roads, improved schools, access to healthcare services, clean water, and support for local businesses and agriculture.

Residents say the consultations provide an important opportunity for their voices to be heard.

Officials from the Ministry explained that the outreach is intended to improve public understanding of how the national budget is prepared and how government resources are distributed across the country.

The initiative also aims to strengthen trust and cooperation between communities and public institutions.

In Grand Gedeh County, many participants welcomed the exercise, describing it as a positive step toward ensuring that development priorities are based on the real needs of the people.

Several citizens emphasized the importance of regular engagement between government representatives and local communities.
