Green Farm, New Iron Gate Community, Bong County |May 23, 2026|The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shut down St. Moses Funeral Parlor in Bong County for violating Liberia’s environmental laws.
The action came during the agency’s ongoing Nationwide Environmental Compliance Monitoring Assessment.
The funeral home is located in Green Farm, New Iron Gate Community,Bong County.
According to EPA inspectors, the facility was operating without meeting important environmental requirements set by law.
EPA authorities said the institution had previously received several non-compliance notices in 2023 concerning its operations in different parts of Liberia.
Despite the warnings, the funeral home reportedly failed to secure the required Environmental Permit.
During the inspection, the General Manager of the Bong County branch, Mr. Augustine Kemocai, said he was not aware of the notices issued before he took office in 2024.
Assistant Manager Mr. Joseph Holder also stated that he had no knowledge of the earlier enforcement actions.
However, EPA inspectors later contacted the institution’s main office in Monrovia during an on-site conference.
Senior management reportedly admitted being aware of the matter but failed to take the necessary steps to correct the situation.
EPA officials described the failure to comply as deliberate and coordinated.
The enforcement team was led by EPA Inspector General R. Baiyezenah Brown.
The agency issued additional non-compliance notices against the funeral home for several violations.
These included operating without an Environmental Permit, operating without chemical importation authorization, failure to register chemicals, and improper handling and use of chemicals.
Following the inspection, EPA authorities ordered all workers and staff members to leave the premises immediately.
The funeral parlor was then officially closed pending full compliance with Liberia’s environmental laws and regulations.
Residents in the area say the closure highlights growing efforts to improve public safety, environmental protection, and proper handling of chemicals within communities.
Many believe such actions are important in protecting public health and keeping institutions accountable.
The EPA said the enforcement action demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that “no institution or individual operates outside the framework of the Environmental Management Law of Liberia, regardless of sector or status.”
