GRAND KRU COUNTY–Grand Kru County Health Officer, Dr. Leawillie Craig, has, in a pressing appeal to the national government through the Ministry of Health, called for the elevation of the current health facilities in the county to the status of comprehensive health centers. Dr. Craig outlined significant challenges plaguing the county’s health system, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced services to meet the growing healthcare demands of the County.
The call for action comes amid ongoing discussions around healthcare reform in Liberia, with many people viewing Grand Kru County as a critical area for intervention.
Dr. Craig highlighted that the existing health facilities are often overwhelmed and under-resourced to deliver healthcare services to the Five Health Districts in the county. “Our health system is at a critical juncture,” he stated, adding, patients are facing immense difficulties accessing basic health services, and the current facilities are not equipped to handle complex health cases. Upgrading to comprehensive health centers is essential to address the diverse needs of our population effectively, Dr. Craig emphasized.
According to the Grand Kru County Health Officer, the primary challenges faced by the county’s health facilities are the lack of specialized assigned doctors, well-equipped Laboratories, medical supplies and personnel, compounded by logistical challenges in transporting resources to remote areas, which often results in delays in handling critical cases. “Many of our clinics operate with a minimal staff, and we frequently run out of essential medicines,” Dr. Craig noted, urging for immediate action to bridge these gaps.
Dr. Craig believes that elevating local health facilities to comprehensive health centers status would facilitate the provision of more specialized services, including maternal and child health care, routine immunizations, and chronic disease management. He indicated that such a transformation would not only improve patient outcomes but also enhance community health awareness and prevention strategies.
He accentuated the importance of community involvement in supporting health initiatives. “Health is not just a government responsibility; it requires the collaboration of community members, local organizations, and international partners,” he stated.
Dr. Craig called for increased advocacy and support from both governmental and non-governmental entities to invest in the county’s health infrastructure.
He disclosed that the county’s health department is preparing to engage with relevant authorities to draft a proposal outlining the necessary steps and funding required to achieve this vital goal with the aim to ensure that citizens’ health needs are met with urgency and efficiency.
