Liberian Parliament Celebrates IWD 2025

Monrovia, Capitol Hill-Friday, March 7, 2025-The Honorable House of Representatives on Thursday, March 6, held a special program in commemoration of International Women’s Day 2025. Observed annually on March 8, International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

This year’s global theme is “ACCELERATE ACTION,” while Liberia’s national theme is “ACCELERATING ACTION: END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE (GBV) AND ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY IN LIBERIA.” The House celebrated under its own legislative theme: “EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, EQUAL POWER FOR WOMEN AT THE LEGISLATURE.”

The program successfully took place on the grounds of the Capitol Building in front of the Rotunda, with Grand Gedeh County Electoral District 2 Representative Marie Johnson delivering an inspiring message. She encouraged women to always stand firm and never allow themselves to be intimidated by anyone in society. She emphasized that women could achieve anything they aspire to be.

The Chairman on Gender, Children, and Protection, Hon. Johnson Williams, stressed the need for bold and decisive legislative action for women and girls. He stated, “Change starts here, with you – and with empowering the next generation.” He further emphasized that young women, girls, and youth are the catalysts for lasting transformation.

For her part, Wokie Dolo Kamara, Gender Focal Person in the Office of the Speaker, highlighted that celebrating Liberian women for their achievements is a clarion call to duty. She urged collective efforts to accelerate progress in Liberia, emphasizing that women have a responsibility to bridge gender gaps and address social imbalances that have hindered societal advancement.

The celebration began with a joyous parade from the University of Liberia’s main entrance to the Temple of Justice, culminating in the official program at the Legislature.

According to the event organizers, the official ceremony colors of green and purple symbolized justice and dignity. The event was attended by members of the Legislature, staffers, and key stakeholders-all demonstrating their commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The 55th Legislature, under the leadership of Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, remains committed to prioritizing gender equality at all levels and fostering an inclusive environment where women have equal opportunities in governance and decision-making.
