Grand Kru County, Liberia |March 8, 2026 |A tense land dispute in Upper Sasstown has reportedly escalated into armed confrontations, as gunshots were fired and residents fled into nearby bushes amid fears for their safety.
Eyewitnesses say armed men from Bolloh Kaykpo and Poe crossed into the contested land on the Sasstown side on Sunday, March 8, 2026, allegedly attempting to intimidate local residents.
The disputed area is known to be rich in gold, and ongoing mining activities are believed to be a central factor in the escalating tensions.
Some residents have accused Grand Kru County Land Administrator David Togba of being involved, while also alleging that influential gold miners from Bolloh may be backing the intruding parties.
These claims, however, have not been independently verified.
During the confrontation, unknown gunmen reportedly fired live bullets, causing widespread panic.
There are also unconfirmed reports that some individuals may have been forcibly taken during the clashes.
In response, Grand Kru County Administrative Officer Alphonso D.N. Teah visited the affected area in an attempt to restore order and mediate between the communities.
Authorities are reportedly awaiting national government intervention to prevent further escalation.
Historically, Bolloh and Jlao Statutory Districts have been considered sister communities, but residents say the ongoing dispute over gold-rich land threatens that long-standing relationship.
Many locals have expressed frustration at county officials for failing to act decisively, despite the leadership of Superintendent Antoinette Wowlee Nimely.
The situation remains tense, and authorities are yet to release an official statement.
