Grand Gedeh County – Thursday, May 15, 2025 – Chrispin T. Doe, the Director of the National Palace of Corrections, has expressed concerns regarding persistent issues faced by the correctional facility in Grand Gedeh County.

In an exclusive interview, Doe highlighted significant obstacles, including insufficient access to safe drinking water, lack of electricity, and limited mobility. He pointed out that the entire facility relies on a single hand pump for water, which leads to delays, escalates tension, and poses risks to both inmates and staff.

Moreover, Doe noted that the prison experiences total darkness at night, despite previously installed solar panels that are currently non-operational due to battery issues. Furthermore, the only vehicle available for transportation has been out of service since 2022.

Despite these challenges, Doe mentioned some positive developments. He indicated that two medical doctors, trained under a specialized security program, have recently been assigned to the prison and are now fully employed at the Zwedru Palace of Correction. These doctors are providing healthcare and distributing medications directly to inmates.

Doe stated that with the introduction of these new doctors, a clinic has been established within the prison facility; representing a significant advancement for inmate welfare. Additionally, rehabilitation programs are in progress, with inmates learning new skills such as tailoring and agriculture to prepare for life after incarceration.

Director Doe is calling on the national government, human rights organizations, and other partners to assist in addressing the numerous challenges facing the facility.

The National Palace of Corrections and Rehabilitation is situated approximately 10 kilometers outside the county capital of Zwedru. As of the latest reports, the facility is currently home to a little over 300 inmates.
