Bomi Superintendent Calls for Stronger Border Security as Liberia Prepares for UN Security Council Role

Tubmanburg, Bomi County- Wednesday, October 15, 2025-As Liberia prepares to assume its seat at the United Nations Security Council in January 2026; Bomi County Superintendent Madam Miatta Dorley has urged the national government to strengthen border security through increased manpower, logistics, and infrastructure support.

Superintendent Dorley made the appeal during a high level regional security meeting held recently in Tubmanburg. The meeting brought together national and local security stakeholders, Superintendents of Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount Counties, Civil Society Actors, Traditional leaders, Women and Youths representations and as well person living with disabilities to assess challenges affecting peace, stability, and governance in Liberia’s western region ahead of the country’s new international responsibility.

Speaking at the forum, Madam Dorley highlighted the growing concerns over illegal border crossings and the lack of sufficient security presence along Bomi’s border corridors. She emphasized that the absence of adequate personnel and logistics exposes the region to potential threats, including smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal migration.

“Bomi County has several entry points, many of which are porous and unmanned,” Superintendent Dorley stated. “We need more trained officers, proper logistics, and coordination among security agencies to effectively secure these areas.”

Madam Dorley further disclosed that the county administration plans to organize a fundraising drive aimed at constructing a sub – joint security station in Tomah Town, which borders neighboring Sierra Leone. According to her, the proposed facility will serve as a critical checkpoint to support law enforcement and ensure the safety of residents and travelers.

“Security is everyone’s business,” she added. “While we await national support, Bomi County is taking its own steps to strengthen local security through community partnership and local initiative.”

Responding to the Superintendent’s concerns, Atty. Samuel Kofi Woods, National Security Advisor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, commended the county authorities for their proactive stance amid the many challenges and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving regional security coordination.

Atty. Woods expressed appreciation to traditional leaders, chiefs, elders, and local officials for their continued efforts in maintaining peace and order across Liberia, especially in communities with limited state security presence.

“Our traditional leaders remain the backbone of local security,” he said. “Their vigilance and mediation efforts have sustained peace even in areas where government security officers are absent.”

Atty. Kofi Woods instructed all Superintendents from the western region to reactivate their County and District Security Councils, as mandated under Liberia’s National Security Reform Law. He said these local councils will serve as vital platforms for addressing and escalating security concerns for timely response by national agencies.

“The reactivation of County and District Security Councils is not optional – it is a legal requirement,” Cllr. Woods emphasized. “These councils will help bridge the gap between national security leadership and local realities.”

The National Security Advisor also announced that his office will provide motorbikes and other logistics to assist county and district security coordinators in carrying out their duties, with the first batch expected to be deployed by December 2025.

The regional security gathering concluded with a renewed commitment from both local and national authorities to enhance inter-agency cooperation, community engagement, and resource mobilization – key priorities as Liberia prepares to take its place at the UN Security Council in January 2026.
