Laar Town, Porkpa District |May 7, 2026| A large group of elephants has invaded farmlands in Laar Town, Porkpa District, Grand Cape Mount County, destroying crops and raising fears of food shortages for local families but also insecurity among residents.
Farmers in the area say the elephants wiped out food crops in a single attack, leaving many households vulnerable as the rainy season begins. They warn that if the situation continues, adults and children in the community will face serious challenges accessing food.
“We are calling on the Forestry Development Authority and the government to help us,” one farmer said. “We need food support now, and we also need a way to drive these elephants away safely.”
Porkpa District is the second district in Grand Cape Mount County to recently report elephant invasions.
Gola Konneh District has experienced repeated incidents, with officials noting that three people have been killed in elephant attacks there in recent times.
Residents of Laar Town are awaiting intervention from authorities as they try to protect their remaining crops from being destroyed.
