Liberia’s 178th Independence Day dawned not with drums, parades, and jubilation in the city of Tubmanburg, Bomi County but with silence, solemnity, and a powerful sense of absence. ‎The streets, usually alive with children in vibrant flag colored attire, community gatherings, and the rhythms of celebration, lay still.

‎For many residents, especially parents and guardians, the day was less about honoring the nation’s freedom and more about grappling with the harsh economic realities that overshadow their daily lives.

    ‎Empty Streets, Heavy Hearts

‎Independence Day is often a time of joy and national pride in Liberia, a moment for families to come together, communities to unite, and citizens to reflect on the progress of their beloved nation. But in Tubmanburg, the mood was far from festivity.

‎‎Streets that should be echoed with laughter and patriotism bore only the sound of passing wind. The town appeared frozen in time, not for celebration, but in quiet endurance.

‎“It doesn’t feel like Independence Day,” said Josephine Stephens; a struggling mother of three and a petty trader in the general market. “We have nothing to celebrate with. The children are home, and they keep asking me for Independence clothes and food. But I can’t give them what I don’t have; said the mother.

    ‎Weight of an Unforgiving Economy

‎The silence in Tubmanburg isn’t just symbolic, it is economic. Across the City, households are facing increasing financial pressures. Food prices have surged. Jobs remain scarce. And for many, the cost of even the simplest traditional celebration like cooking a shared family meal or buying a Liberian flag outfit has become unbearable.

‎James Domah Johnson, former teacher now working odd construction jobs, shared his struggle: “Last year, I managed to cook for my family and even bought little flags for the kids. This year, we’re just trying to eat rice with salt. That’s where we are now.”

‎‎This sentiment may resonate deeply across Bomi. Parents, the traditional anchors of family celebrations, find themselves cornered by inflation and unemployment. ‎The usual joy of watching children dance in the streets has been replaced by quiet coping mechanisms; prayers, silence, and restraint.

    ‎A Celebration Without Celebration

‎‎There were no parades in Tubmanburg this year. No public performances or speeches echoing through loudspeakers. ‎The atmosphere is speaking volumes – not just about the challenges of the present, but about the collective uncertainty for the future.

‎‎For many, this muted Independence Day served as a stark reminder: liberty without economic security feels like a hollow freedom.

‎A Call for More Than Remembrance

‎While the rest of the country may have celebrated in varying degrees, Tubmanburg’s experience underscores a growing divide in how Liberians engage with national milestones. ‎The people of Bomi aren’t unpatriotic—they are simply burdened. And until economic hope is restored, days like July 26 may continue to be marked by more reflection than jubilation.

‎“There’s still pride in being Liberian,” said Chief Siafa Goto Jallah, a retired teacher sitting on his porch. “But pride alone doesn’t fill your pot. We need leaders to see how hard it is for us out here. This Independence Day should be a wake-up call.”

‎Saving the day for the children

‎Around 3:00 PM, just as the day seemed to wind down-Senator Snowe hosted a vibrant children’s party, complete with music, food, and gift presentations. ‎The event drew hundreds of children from across Senjeh District, transforming what could have been an uneventful holiday into a moment of joy and togetherness.

‎A staff member from the Senator’s office explained that this gesture was the Senator’s personal way of identifying with the children on such an important national occasion. ‎“It would’ve been a shame to let the day pass without bringing smiles to these young faces,” the staffer said.

‎With no official celebration organized by the local administration, Senator Snowe stepped up in a big way. ‎His magnanimity filled the gap and in doing so, he saved the day for many children who might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

    Conclusion

As Liberia commemorates 178 years of independence, Tubmanburg serves as a poignant illustration of a nation in search of deeper meaning beyond ceremonial declarations. ‎The empty streets are not just a lack of celebration, they are a cry for attention, a mirror of reality, and a symbol of resilience.
