Lofa, November 14, 2024-The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health, on Thursday November 14, 2024, turned over a newly constructed maternity waiting home to the Administration of the Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital in Voinjama City. The maternity waiting home contained five bed rooms and two offices.
Lofa County Health Officer, Dr. Moses Weidehgar said the facility will be used to cater to pregnant women who will travel far distance to have a short stay at Tellewoyan Hospital before delivery. Dr. Weidehgar encouraged pregnant women, particularly those living in far distances to go to the hospital for short stay where they will be under proper supervision.
” We have mattresses in here, cooking materials, television and we will lobby with our partners for food supply in this facility for pregnant women”, Dr. Weidehgar said during the turning over ceremony in Voinjama City, Lofa County.
Also speaking at the Ceremony, Madam Gloria D. Yancy, Program Specialist GBV/Harmful Practices UNFPA Liberia said, Lofa County should take full charge of the maternity waiting home. She encouraged pregnant women to regularly visit the hospital especially those living in Far distances.
“This facility was built for you Lofa County, please take proper care and make sure that it is maintained properly ” she added. The Medical Director at Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital, Dr. Galakpa Johnson has promised to keep the facility up to date while at the same time requesting for additional support to keep it operational. The maternity waiting home was built with funding support from the European Union Spotlight Initiatives.
