Grand Kru County, Barclayville City-Tuesday March 11, 2025-The Agriculture Department at Grand Kru Technical College has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at enhancing practical agricultural training for its students on 2.5 hectares of land allocated for said purpose; with focus on the cultivation of cassava, a staple crop in Grand Kru County.

Pius Nyanford, a lecturer and the head of the Agriculture Department, spearheaded this project, underscoring its importance in providing students with hands-on experience in crop cultivation as the institution primary goal to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge that align with modern agricultural practices.
“Our primary goal is to equip our students with the necessary skills and knowledge that align with modern agricultural practices,” Nyanford stated in a recent interview.

He emphasized that the cassava plantation will serve as a living laboratory for students to learn about crop management, pest control and sustainable farming techniques, while at the same time calling for materials and resources to support their efforts.
“In order to make this initiative successful, we are seeking assistance in the form of seeds, farming tools, and educational materials. These resources are crucial for ensuring that our students receive a comprehensive training experience,” he added.

According to the Grand Kru Technical College Agriculture Department head, the decision to focus on cassava cultivation stems from its significance in Liberia’s agricultural landscape; indicating that cassava is not only a vital food source for many households but also has the potential to be processed into various products, providing economic opportunities for local farmers and communities.
Pius Nyanford added that the Agriculture Department at the Grand Kru Technical College aims to demonstrate best practices in cassava cultivation, thereby promoting food security and sustainability in Barclayville, and Grand Kru County at large.
Nyanford then concluded, “We envision this project not only as a training ground for our students but also as a catalyst for agricultural development in Grand Kru County. With the right support, we can make a worthwhile impact.”
Pius Nyanford maintained that the Agriculture Department remains optimistic about building partnerships with local businesses, NGOs, and government entities to secure the necessary resources and expertise needed for a successful launch and operation.
