Historic Dewai Town in Gbarpolu Cries for Government and Humanitarian Support Amid Harsh Living Conditions

Dewai Town, Gbarma District- October 14, 2025-Deep within the dense forests of Gbarma District lies Dewai Town, a once vibrant historical settlement now struggling for survival. The community, tucked away in the heart of Gbarpolu County, has become a symbol of abandonment a place where hope flickers dimly amid crumbling roads, broken promises, and a growing sense of isolation.

For Momo Siryon, the town’s spokesperson, the cries of his people have gone unheard for far too long. Speaking passionately to Rural Reporter News Network, Siryon painted a painful picture of neglect and hardship that has left residents feeling forgotten by their own government.

“We only see our lawmakers during election time,” he lamented. “They come here asking for our votes, but when the elections are over, they forget we exist.”

A Town Cut Off from Development

Siryon described Dewai as a community left behind in the nation’s progress. With no school building, no guesthouse, and impassable roads, daily life has become a battle for survival.

The town’s only source of safe drinking water; a single aging hand pump is barely functioning and no longer meets the needs of the growing population.

“More than a hundred people depend on that one hand pump,” Siryon said. “Sometimes, we have to wait hours just to fetch a few gallons of water. When it breaks down, we are forced to drink from the creek.”

The lack of infrastructure has crippled education and access to healthcare. Children walk long distances to attend classes in nearby villages, while the sick and elderly often remain untreated due to poor road connectivity.

A Plea for Help

Despite the hardships, the spirit of Dewai’s residents remains unbroken. Siryon and other community members continue to hope that their cries will reach the right ears that someone will finally see their struggle.

He is calling on the central government, district representatives, and humanitarian organizations to intervene and help rebuild Dewai’s future.

“We are not asking for too much,” Siryon said quietly. “We just want clean water, better roads, and a school for our children. We want to feel like part of this country again.”

A Silent Struggle That Speaks for Many

Dewai’s plight reflects the reality of many rural towns across Liberia – communities that bear the weight of poverty and underdevelopment while waiting for promise to be fulfilled.

As the rest of the nation moves forward, Dewai remains a reminder that progress means little when some are left behind.

Until help arrives, the people of Dewai Town will continue to endure, holding on to the hope that their voices – once lost in the forest – will finally be heard.
