Three Inmates Escaped Due to Poor Prison Facility in River Gee

River Gee County –Saturday, May 31, 2025 – At least three inmates have escaped from the central prison of Fish-Town, River Gee County.

The three inmates, sentenced for different crimes early Wednesday morning, May 28, 2025 managed to escape from the Fish Town Central Prison creating fear among residents of the area.

The escapees have been identified as Nelson Jolo, sentenced for 15 years for armed robbery; Samuel Toe, sentenced for 10-year for illegal drug possession and Anthony Davis, alias  Taree, a one year term prisoner convict.

Prison Superintendent, Josiah Gardee Voer confirmed the jailbreak, attributing it to the deteriorating condition of the prison’s walls and fence. It was observed that only few correctional officers were on duty that night, something that may helped to facilitate the jailbreak.

River Gee County Attorney, Fofie V. Kamara said that the jailbreak occurred around midnight when the inmates took advantage of the poor condition of the prison wall and escaped. Authorities said they were alerted shortly after the inmates had escaped.

“About a year ago, residents broke into the prison, and since then, the fence has not been repaired. We had to temporarily cover the damaged section with ceiling tiles. The escapees exploited this weak point,” explained Attorney Kamara.

He added that efforts are underway to secure funding to replace the ceiling tiles with planks to prevent reoccurrence of the act.

“Our safety is at risk due to the structural problems of the facility. The doors and windows are in poor shape, and we have repeatedly asked the Ministry of Justice for repairs, but no action has been taken,” Kamara told journalists.

He also noted that on May 3, 2025, the Assistant Minister for Litigation at the Ministry of Justice, Lafayette Gould Sr., visited the prison and promised some renovations, something yet to be done.

Internal investigation is currently ongoing to establish how the jailbreak happened. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the escapees to contact local law enforcement officers as soon as possible. The Fisht Town central prison currently housed around 80 inmates for various crimes, including pre-trial detainees.

Residents of Fish-Town, especially local shop owners, have expressed serious safety concerns for their lives and properties. They are quoted as saying, “It’s frightening to think these individuals are still out there. We hope the authorities catch them quickly.”

Meanwhile, the joint security in River Gee headed by the Liberia National Police is working to re-arrest the escapees.
