Barclayville, Grand Kru County- Wednesday, May 28, 2025 — A team from the Liberia Chainsaw and Timber Dealers Union (LICSATDUN), led by Julius Kamara, successfully concluded a daylong dialogue with various stakeholders focused on raising awareness about the chainsaw regulations established by the Liberian government.
The event, held in Barclayville, emphasized the importance of sustainable forest management and the effective implementation of regulations designed to protect Liberia’s rich forest resources.
The dialogue gathered representatives from community groups, environmental organizations, government agencies, and the private sector to discuss strategies for engaging communities in sustainable practices related to forest management aimed to clarify the roles and responsibilities outlined in the chainsaw regulations issued by the Forestry Development Authority (FDA).
Speaking shortly after the gathering, Julius Kamara, one of the heads of the LICSATDUN team highlighted the critical need for stakeholder collaboration in preserving Liberia’s forests. “Our forests are not just natural resources; they are the backbone of our communities and the environment,” Kamara stated. “By working together, we can ensure that the chainsaw regulations are not just policies on paper but are actively embraced and implemented in ways that benefit both people and nature.”
According to him, the chainsaw regulations, developed in partnership with the FDA, were instituted to regulate the use of chainsaws in logging activities, ensuring that they are used sustainably and legally.
These regulations aim to curb illegal logging practices that have led to significant deforestation and environmental degradation in the country.
Throughout the day, participants were engaged in breakout sessions to discuss practical approaches to community involvement in forest management with topics including the importance of local knowledge in resource management, the economic benefits of sustainable forestry, and the need for monitoring and enforcement of the chainsaw regulations.
The dialogue concluded with a call to action for all participants to commit to implementing the chainsaw regulations and promoting sustainable practices within their networks.
LICSATDUN team pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders to facilitate workshops and training sessions aimed at enhancing compliance with the new regulations.
