Monrovia, Liberia | January 15, 2026 | The Liberia Association of Nurse Anesthetists (LANA) has announced the suspension of anesthesia services nationwide, effective January 15, 2026, at 8:00am, citing under compensation and lack of response from the government.
The Association, which represents 91 members, claims that despite their crucial role in 99% of successful surgeries, they continue to face significant hurdles, including low pay and poor working conditions.
According to LANA President Mehnpaine S. Dolo, the association submitted a petition on December 13, 2025, seeking recognition and redress, but has yet to receive a response.
The suspension of services is expected to paralyze surgical services nationwide, affecting patients and healthcare facilities.
Meanwhile, officials of the Gbarpolu County Health Team have confirmed the suspension, and the only Anesthesia at the Emirates Hospital has also left the hospital.
Anesthesia plays a vital role in hospitals, enabling surgeons to perform life-saving procedures without causing patients undue pain or discomfort.
The suspension of anesthesia services will severely impact surgical services at health facilities, putting patients’ lives at risk.
