Salayea City, Salayea Administrative District, Lofa County |April 14, 2026 |The Office of the Salayea Administrative District Education Officer has announced that 15 out of 21 public schools in the district are expected to benefit from government’s school feeding program, amid growing concerns over a decline in student enrollment.

The disclosure was made by statisticians at the District Education Office during a recent interview with reporters in Salayea.

According to the Statistician in the office of the district education officer the district is currently facing serious challenges, particularly a noticeable drop in school enrollment. He attributed the decline primarily to an increase in teenage pregnancy among school-going girls and the rising trend of boys leaving school to engage in gold mining activities in search of quick income.

Mr. Korkorlee also pointed to a lack of adequate parental and community support as a contributing factor to the situation.

Providing an overview of the district’s education system, he revealed that there are currently 30 schools operating across Salayea District, comprising 21 public schools and 9 faith-based institutions.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Korkorlee expressed appreciation to the national government for selecting 15 public schools in the district to benefit from the ongoing school feeding program. The initiative, which was previously supported by USAID, is now being sustained by the government following a cut in external funding.

He noted that the program is aimed at reducing hunger among students and improving school attendance and retention.

Speaking on the selection process, Mr. Korkorlee explained that beneficiary schools were chosen based on criteria established by the government. He added that schools not currently included in the program may be considered in future phases.

Education stakeholders in the district are hopeful that the feeding program, along with increased community awareness, will help address the enrollment crisis and improve learning outcomes for children in Salayea.
