Traditional leaders and residents in Salayea District, Lofa County, are calling for greater recognition and respect for Liberia’s indigenous cultural institutions as conversations continue around national identity, community values, and social cohesion.

The concerns were highlighted during a gathering on May 12, 2026, where community elders, youth representatives, and local residents discussed the importance of preserving traditional practices while promoting peaceful coexistence and national development.

Speaking to the gathering, Lofa County Senator Joseph K. Jallah said Liberia’s traditional institutions continue to play an important role in maintaining community unity, moral guidance, and cultural identity across generations.

According to Senator Jallah, traditional practices such as the Poro and Sande societies remain deeply connected to the social structure and heritage of many communities throughout the country.

“Traditional institutions should not be undermined or misrepresented, but instead respected within the framework of the country’s laws and democratic principles,” Jallah stated.

He noted that as Liberia continues to modernize, efforts to strengthen democracy and national development should also include the protection and recognition of cultural values that define local communities and indigenous identity.

The senator emphasized that traditional leaders should be included in national discussions involving culture, community practices, and social development because of their long-standing role within society.

“Traditional authorities are the rightful custodians of Liberia’s indigenous heritage and therefore deserve a seat at the table whenever policies or discussions affecting traditional practices are being considered,” he said.

Jallah also encouraged stronger dialogue between public institutions and traditional communities to promote understanding, peace, and unity across the country.

He urged young people to respect their cultural roots while pursuing education and contributing positively to national progress.

Traditional leaders and residents attending the gathering welcomed the remarks and expressed appreciation for continued advocacy aimed at protecting Liberia’s cultural heritage and strengthening respect for community traditions.
