ZORZOR, LOFA COUNTY—Zorzor Central High School has secured regional spot after beating Salayea Central High School in nail-biting penalty shootout of the football component of the 2025 National High School Championship.
The football match, which took place on July 21, 2025 at the Zorzor Central High School sports pitch, ended 1-1 full-time. Zorzor’s Karsor Teewu opened the scoring early in the first half with a brilliant finish, giving the home side a much-needed advantage.
The match took a dramatic turn when the same player, Teewu, unintentionally scored an own goal, leveling the score and reigniting hope for the visitor.
Following a full-time 1-1 draw, the match headed into a penalty shootout in which Zorzor Central High School emerged victorious, clinching their spot in the regional championship in Voinjama.
In the girls’ kickball category, the Zorzor Central High School girls dominated the field with an impressive 5 home runs to 2, defeating their Salayea opponents by a margin of 3 home runs. The resounding victory also secured them a place in the regional round like their boys
Tournament Overview
The 2025 National High School Championship, featuring both football and kickball, runs across six days in Lofa County—July 21, 23, 24, 25, and 30. The tournament is planned to take place in four districts: Zorzor, Voinjama, Foya, and Kolahun.
Competing high schools include: Zorzor Central High School, Salayea Central High School, St. Joseph Catholic Mission High School, Voinjama Multilateral High School, Voinjama Free Pentecostal Mission School, Voinjama Public High School and Foya Central High School.
Others are: Tamba Taylor High School, Free Pentecostal Mission School, Assembly of God Mission School, Free Pentecostal Global Mission School, Kolahun Central High School and Bolahun Public School.
The county-level tournament is the first stage in a three-tier national competition organized by National High School Sports—an institution committed to using sports to increase school enrollment and civic awareness.
From County to National Stage
Winners from Lofa County will proceed to the Region 1 Championship in Voinjama, where they will meet champions from Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Margibi. The National High School Sports will cover transportation, feeding, and lodging costs for all qualified teams.
Regional winners will then compete in the National High School Championship Finals to be held in Montserrado County. Attractive prizes for champions include, US$7,000 cash prize, Medals & Large Trophy, and international trip to Ghana or Nigeria. The MVP Awards: US$1,000 each for football and kickball, plus gifts from sponsors.
Founded in 2017, National High School Sports promotes education through athletics. The organization partners with Global Fund/National Malaria Control Program, WaterAid Liberia, UNESCO, the Central Bank of Liberia, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, and the WASH Commission.
With this latest victory, Zorzor Central High School continues its march toward national glory-proving yet again that Lofa’s schools are a force to reckon with on the national soccer stage.
