Bopolu City, Gbarpolu |May 31, 2026| More than 30 volunteers gathered in Bopolu City on May 26, 2026, for a one-day Green Response clean-up campaign aimed at improving sanitation and promoting healthier communities in Gbarpolu County.
The event was organized by the Gbarpolu Red Cross Chapter in partnership with the Bopolu City Corporation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Sustainable Community Engaged for Change (SUCEC) Project.
Volunteers from the Red Cross and the city corporation worked together to clean streets and public areas as part of efforts to encourage environmental responsibility and community participation.
Speaking during the event, Red Cross Field Officer Kerkula K. Zor highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
“A clean environment improves health, sanitation, and community well-being. Environmental cleaning is not just an activity it is a responsibility we all share to protect our families and future generations,” he said.
Zor explained that the clean-up campaign forms part of the SUCEC Project’s broader activities to educate communities about environmental care and healthier living conditions.
“Today’s clean-up is more than just picking up waste. It is part of the ongoing SUCEC Project in Gbarpolu County, which teaches communities how to care for their environment and build healthier surroundings,” he said.
EPA Environmental Inspector Paul Moiwen also stressed the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
“The environment is not basically about us today. The environment is about the current generation and the unborn generation,” he said.
Moiwen warned that poor waste management can lead to illness and health problems for both adults and children.
He added that the EPA continues to work with government institutions and local authorities to raise awareness about sanitation and environmental safety.
Bopolu City Corporation Secretary Zinnah Korvah described cleanliness as a shared responsibility for all residents.
“When it comes to the environment, it is everybody’s business. It will be good this time that we join the Red Cross so that the cleanliness of the city can be every one of us business,” Korvah said.
Meanwhile, Bopolu City Mayor Mrs. Siah Victor-Kieh called on organizations across Gbarpolu County to support community clean-up efforts.
“This is an SOS call. I’m calling on every organization in Gbarpolu County to come on board so that we all can clean this country and this city,” she said.
She added that a clean city creates a healthier and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
