Tubmanburg City, Bomi County | January 20, 2026 | The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has announced plans to construct housing units for officers deployed in rural parts of the country, beginning with counties in Western Liberia – a move aimed at addressing long-standing accommodation challenges faced by frontline personnel.
The announcement was made at the close of a day-long regional development meeting on January 19, 2026 in Bomi County chaired by the Director of Operations, Mr. Danny Sartee.
The gathering brought together senior LIS officers and regional border security commanders to discuss operational challenges, officer welfare, and cross-border coordination.
Speaking to Rural Reporters News Network following the meeting, Mr. Sartee said the engagement was designed to strengthen cooperation among immigration units while allowing national leadership to gain firsthand knowledge of the realities officers face in remote postings.
According to him, the Liberia Immigration Service has completed the acquisition of land with fully processed deeds, legally surveyed and registered under the authority of the institution.
He disclosed that construction of housing facilities will begin shortly, starting in Western Liberia, as part of efforts to improve living conditions for officers stationed in rural areas.
“These housing projects are intended to address years of hardship endured by our officers, especially those serving in difficult terrains far from urban centers,” Director Sartee noted.
Meanwhile, the meeting also highlighted concerns regarding the conduct of some immigration officers at border points and checkpoints.
Former Governor of the Sierra Leonean community in Liberia, Mr. Alexander Koromo, alleged continued harassment of Sierra Leonean nationals at various checkpoints across the country. He claimed that several individuals have been detained due to documentation issues, describing the situation as troubling and requiring urgent diplomatic attention.
Mr. Koromo called on the Prime Minister of Sierra Leone to engage the Liberian Government to find lasting solutions to the reported abuses.
Responding to the allegations, Director Sartee confirmed that the Liberia Immigration Service has received similar reports. He cautioned all officers assigned at border posts and checkpoints to uphold professional ethics when dealing with both citizens and foreign nationals.
He warned that any officer found guilty of intimidation, harassment, or extortion will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Director Sartee further encouraged members of the public to formally report acts of misconduct directly to the Office of the Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service.
The regional meeting concluded with renewed commitments from LIS leadership to enhance officer welfare, improve border security coordination, and strengthen public trust in the nation’s immigration system.
