Bo-Waterside, Grand Cape Mount –Tuesday, May 06, 2025- In a bid to strengthen the fight against economic crimes, the Liberia National Police’s Financial Crime Investigation Division unveiled a new billboard at the Bo-Waterside port of entry over the weekend.
The ceremony, led by Johnny Borlar, Dean Commissioner for the Crime Service Department, took place on Friday, May 02, 2025, marking a significant step in public awareness and crime prevention.
The billboard prominently displays the message, “Stop Currency Trafficking and Goods Smuggling,” serving as a stark reminder to travelers and traders about the consequences of illegal activities at Liberia’s borders.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Borlar emphasized the division’s expanded focus on investigating economic crimes, terroristic financing, and related illicit activities.
He explained that under Liberian law, travelers carrying more than $10,000 USD must declare the amount through official channels, such as banks.

He said that failure to do so, raises suspicion of terroristic financing or money laundering; both serious crimes under the law.
For his part, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Alvin G. James, highlighted the importance of this initiative. He said that smuggling goods without paying taxes is also a criminal offense.
Subsequently, he announced plans to install more billboards at various border points across the country. He said that this will help to increase awareness and curb illicit activities.

This initiative underscores Liberia’s commitment to safeguarding its economy and promoting lawful border trade.
The LNP believes that their continued effort is expected to educate citizens and travelers about the legal boundaries and penalties associated with currency trafficking and smuggling.
