Potupo Jaytoken, River Gee County – Wednesday, April 23, 2025 – Following a catastrophic storm that struck Saiyah Elementary School in Potupo Jaytoken on April 9, 2025, Principal Morris Jarwin has made an urgent and passionate appeal to both the local community, school district officials and not-for-profit organizations for swift action to rebuild the severely compromised school facilities.

The storm, which occurred around 4:00 PM, brought with it strong winds and torrential rainfall, resulting in significant damage to numerous structures in the region. Saiyah Elementary, which plays a pivotal role in local education by serving over 100 students from early childhood through 6th grade, was notably impacted, leading to ongoing safety evaluations of the building.
“When the storm passed, we quickly began an assessment of the damage,” Jarwin explained. “While the ABC to 3rd grade section previously had its challenges, it was manageable. Now, the situation has escalated to a point where the building is entirely unsafe, and we have no suitable space for the children to learn.”
Extent of Damage
The K2 section of the school bore the brunt of the storm, experiencing severe destruction that has rendered it uninhabitable, with parts of the roof completely removed.

“We’re thankful that there were no students, teachers, or administrative staff on-site during the storm. Our immediate focus is not only on rebuilding but also on ensuring a safe and supportive environment for our students,” Jarwin added.
Community Involvement and Fundraising Initiative
In light of the principal’s appeal, community leaders alongside parent-teacher associations have convened a preliminary meeting to initiate fundraising efforts aimed at securing the financial support needed for reconstruction efforts.
Involvement of the County School Board
County Education Officer Mr. Jallah Sammy addressed the situation, expressing his deep sorrow over the destruction and recognizing the severity of the incident. He stated that he is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Education to formulate a coordinated response. Additionally, he called for united efforts from local authorities and partners to tackle the ongoing crisis. His plea highlights the community’s collective commitment to rebuilding and ensuring a brighter educational future for the affected students.

Mr. Sammy, speaking on behalf of the County School Board, acknowledged the damage to the school building and reiterated the Ministry of Education’s commitment to addressing the issue. He said, “The safety and education of our students are of utmost importance. We are actively engaging with our leaders at the Ministry of Education to evaluate the extent of the damage and to explore the possibilities for reconstruction.”
Looking Forward
Meanwhile, students from ABC to 3rd grade have been temporarily moved to a Town Hall to continue their classes under an adjusted schedule while evaluations of the damage are carried out. Principal Morris Jarwin emphasized, “We want to ensure that our students continue receiving the education they deserve, even during these difficult times.”
As the community comes together to face these challenges, the resilience and solidarity of Potupo district are evident. With heartfelt appeals and coordinated efforts, there is a strong hope for a brighter and safer future for Saiyah Public School.
The principal and community members are urging local residents and humanitarian organizations to provide support in creating a conducive learning environment and ensuring quality education.
According to Principal Jarwin, the Saiyah Public School is a self-help initiative established by the Jaytoken community in early 2010.
