Mendikorma Town, Lofa County |May 25, 2026|Citizens of Lofa County are celebrating the official commencement of the long-awaited Mendikorma to Voinjama road project after many years of promises and delays.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Saturday, May 3, 2026, in Mendikorma Town, Foya Statutory District.
Many residents gathered to welcome officials from the Ministry of Public Works and members of the executive branch of government who attended the ceremony.
Community members described the event as an important step toward improving transportation and development in the county.
The project was officially launched in Mendikorma Town near the Liberia–Sierra Leone border.
Local residents, development partners, and stakeholders attended the ceremony to witness the beginning of the major road project.
In separate remarks, representatives from different sectors, including neighboring Sierra Leone, thanked partners for supporting the initiative.
They said the road project will strengthen regional cooperation and improve movement between communities.
“We are happy to be here for this groundbreaking ceremony in Mendikorma Town, and we believe that this will improve economic activities in Liberia and the region,” President Joseph Nyuma Boakai said during the event.
The President arrived in Foya City aboard a Mission Aviation Fellowship aircraft and was welcomed by Local Government Minister Francis S. Nyumalin, along with chiefs, elders, and local government officials from across Lofa County.
Public Works Minister Lafayette Roland Giddings and members of his technical team also attended the ceremony.
Officials say the ministry will supervise important parts of the road construction process.
Private sector representatives were also present, including Mr. Alimou Sanu Barrie, Chief Executive Officer of Pavifort Associates, the company contracted to carry out the paving work on the highway corridor.
Citizens say they are hopeful the road project will improve trade, transportation, and access to services across Lofa County and nearby communities.
At the same time, some residents expressed concern about only seeing trucks at the site and not heavy earth-moving machines needed for construction.
Recruitment for skilled and unskilled workers is currently ongoing in Foya City and Voinjama City.
Many young people and residents believe the project will create jobs and bring new economic opportunities to communities along the Mendikorma to Voinjama corridor.
