Barclayville, Grand Kru County- Saturday, May 31, 2025— Inmates at the Barclayville Central Prison have been given medical treatment by health practitioners of the Ministry of Health.

According to our correspondent in the county, government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, commenced the health initiative to curb potential outbreak among inmates there.

It followed recent report by this reporter about the overcrowding of the Barclayville withholding cell. Recently, it was reported that the cell was overcrowded as inmates there were two times the number of inmates it was built for.

The cell was made for at least 15 inmates, but was hosting more than 30 inmates.

Report about the news regarding the treatment of inmates at the Barclayville withholding cell has been welcomed by prison officials, according to our correspondent.

Moses Allison, superintendent of the Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation expressed gratitude to the government of Liberia and partners though the Ministry of Health for their timely provision of the medical supplies.

He spoke about the importance of the supplies provided, adding that they are vital in addressing the pressing healthcare needs of inmates. Over the years, many inmates and pre-trial detainees have complained about the challenges they face in accessing adequate medical attention at various prison facilities across Liberia.

“The initiative comes amidst ongoing concerns about the health standards in correctional facilities across Liberia,” Allision added.

It is reported that inmates at the Barclayville withholding cell suffered from several diseases, including communicable diseases and chronic illnesses that require serious medical attention.

Health officials are set to work closely with the prison staff to ensure that the medical supplies are effectively utilized. The initiative include health screenings, treatment for prevalent illnesses, and health education for inmates on personal hygiene and disease prevention.

“I think this is just the beginning of what our office hopes will be an ongoing effort or process to safeguard the health of all inmates within our correctional facilities,” added Superintendent Allison.

Meanwhile County Authorities and the correctional facility team have expressed their commitment in ensuring that justice system within the county flow orderly and uninterrupted with the overall goal being to uphold the rule of law.
