HARPER, MARYLAND COUNTY –The long-awaited authorization to begin the renovation of the dilapidated John Hilary Tubman High School in Harper has finally been granted by Liberia’s Ministry of Education.

The official “blessing” for the project was delivered on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, through Larry D. Nimely Jr., the Maryland County Education Officer (CEO). The news marks a turning point for the institution, which has suffered from severe neglect and structural decline for over a decade.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Education in Maryland County, I wish to sincerely thank you for your expressed interest in renovating John Hilary Tubman High School, your alma mater” the letter said. “We warmly accept your offer and appreciate your commitment to the advancement of quality education in our county,” it continued.

    A Commitment to Alma Mater

The initiative was spearheaded just two weeks ago by Patrick Morais, a prominent Marylander and alumnus of the school. Moved by the deteriorating state of his alma mater, Mr. Morais committed to a comprehensive renovation and refurbishment of the facility.

The official communication was presented at the Oldroad PM Guest House in Monrovia—a business owned by Mr. Morais. During the presentation, CEO Larry Nimely expressed deep satisfaction with the gesture, commending Mr. Morais for his “farsightedness” and dedication to supporting educational activities in the region.

    A Track Record of Philanthropy

In his remarks, Patrick Morais pledged to continue his developmental interventions in Maryland County through the Patrick Morais Acquaintance Team. This group has already established a footprint of community service in the Harper District, with past projects including, the construction of 16 public flush toilets across various communities and investment of over 1 million Liberian Dollars in micro-loans to support local market women.

    Community and Diaspora Support

The announcement has sparked a wave of appreciation from local citizens, who described Mr. Morais’ consistent “give-back” spirit as unprecedented in recent years.

The project is also gaining significant traction within the Maryland County diaspora. Many Marylanders visiting home for the Christmas holidays expressed shock at the school’s dilapidated condition but noted their relief upon learning that a restoration plan is now officially underway.
