Dwehken, River Gee County –Monday, May 12, 2025 – The River Gee Chapter of the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) observed World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8, 2025, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing humanity.
Each year on May 08, the global community comes together to commemorate this day in honor of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, whose legacy in humanitarian efforts remains significant and was a vigorous advocate for the principles of the Red Cross.

The celebration took place at the Dwehken Town Hall and was attended by community members, local leaders, and Red Cross volunteers. Dwehken is situated in the Gbeapo Statutory District, approximately 27 kilometers from the county capital, Fish Town.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the humanitarian values that form the foundation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements while celebrating the contributions of Henry Dunant, who devoted his life to humanitarian service.
During the event, River Gee Chapter Field Officer, Matthew Wesseh delivered an impassioned speech highlighting the significance of serving humanity. He reflected on Dunant’s relentless dedication to providing aid in times of crisis, stressing the lasting impact his efforts have had on humanity worldwide.

Wesseh centered his theme on the phrase, “On the side of Humanity, Red Cross is always there,” emphasizing the compassion and commitment that characterize the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements. Wesseh special speech was consistent with the global principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality upheld by the Red Cross.
In his address, the Red Cross Field Officer, urged all community members and local leaders to embrace and integrate the principles of humanity into their everyday lives.
He emphasized the importance of individual contributions towards creating a stronger community, especially in areas such as healthcare, disaster management, and social support systems.
The event also acknowledged the significant efforts of volunteers who have selflessly devoted their time to support the mission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
Fostering a sense of unity, the gathering encouraged community members to engage in discussions about local issues and the vital role played by the Red Cross.
Many participants, predominantly women, expressed their appreciation for the various services provided by the Red Cross in the county, sharing personal experiences that highlighted the organization’s positive influence in their lives.

In an exclusive interview, Ma- Esther Toe, 46, commended the humanitarian organization for its outreach to the Dwehken community and stated that, on behalf of the women, they are always willing to collaborate with societal organizations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent.
As the day concluded, the River Gee Chapter reaffirmed its dedication to the core values of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements. Inspired by the legacy of Henry Dunant, the chapter pledged to continue its humanitarian efforts, ensuring assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations within their communities.
The celebration not only marked a memorable occasion but also served as a crucial reminder of the persistent need for humanitarian action and community unity in tackling both local and global challenges.
