A heartbreaking tragedy struck on Tuesday, when an infant, a year and six months old female only identified as Forlay, drowned in a creek, in the New Settlement Community of Fish Town City, River Gee County.

Vicky Toe, the grieving mother of the drowned child, told Rural Reporters News Network (RRNN) that she had left the baby in the care of her peers while she went to the market, and upon her return, she discovered the baby lying unresponsive in the creek, a stone’s throw away from their home.

According to Toe, she immediately alerted community members and called the Liberia National Police (LNP) to report the devastating incident.

The police later arrived at the scene of the tragic incident, and thereafter set up a 15-member coroner’s jury to investigate the cause of death.

Following preliminary investigation, the coroner’s jury established that the infant died from drowning.

Although no external injuries or missing body parts were observed on the corpse of the little girl, the police have launched a formal investigation and are questioning the child’s both parents at the Fish Town Police Headquarters.

The untimely death of little Forlay has sparked concern among locals of Fish Town, especially those within the New Settlement Community, regarding providing care to children and parental responsibility.

Citizens and residents in the area are urging parents and guardians to exercise greater vigilance, especially when it comes to caring for children at tender age, to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incident in that part of the country.
