Zwedru City, Grand Gedeh County |June 2, 2026 | The Liberia National Police (LNP) Traffic Detachment in Grand Gedeh County and the Federation of Motorcycle and Tricycle Union of Liberia (FOMTUL) have launched a major road safety awareness campaign aimed at reducing accidents and improving transportation services.
The campaign, announced in Zwedru, combines stricter enforcement of traffic regulations with a reduction in motorcycle transport fares to provide relief for commuters across the county.
Speaking during the awareness exercise, FOMTUL Grand Gedeh Detachment head Aaron Siaffa Weah announced a new fare structure for commercial motorcyclists operating within the city.
Under the new arrangement, passengers traveling longer distances will now pay LD$100 instead of LD$150, while short-distance fares have been reduced from LD$100 to LD$50.
Residents and commuters have welcomed the fare reduction, saying it will help ease transportation costs for families and workers who depend on motorcycles for daily travel.
Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Hassan S. Kamara of the LNP Traffic Division warned that full enforcement of traffic regulations will begin on June 8, 2026.
He stressed that violators will face penalties if they fail to comply with road safety requirements.
Authorities outlined several rules for motorcyclists, including maintaining headlights, side mirrors, and standard motorcycle wheels.
Riders are also prohibited from operating motorcycles while wearing slippers or using MP3 sound systems on their bikes.
Police further emphasized that individuals under the age of 18 will not be allowed to operate motorcycles, a measure aimed at improving safety and reducing road accidents.
Community members say the campaign is an important step toward creating safer roads while ensuring affordable transportation for residents throughout Grand Gedeh County.
Officials from both the police and the motorcycle union expressed hope that greater public awareness, responsible riding practices, and cooperation from transport operators will contribute to safer communities and improved road safety across the county.
