Gbarnga City, Bong County |May 16, 2026|A local organization in Bong County is preparing to launch a new agroecological farming project aimed at helping communities affected by mining activities.
The project is being carried out by Youth Action Lead Liberia with support from Friends of Liberia.
The organization said the project will focus on improving farming activities and restoring damaged land in several mining-affected communities across Bong County.
Youth Action Lead Liberia is a non-governmental organization involved with climate change awareness and community empowerment in Bong and Lofa Counties.
Speaking in Gbarnga on Friday, May 15, 2026, the Executive Director of the organization, Edwin Boakai, said the project is intended to support families heavily affected by environmental damage.
According to him, many communities continue to suffer because mining activities have damaged important soils, water sources, and farmland used by local people for survival.
Mr. Boakai explained that the project will help restore damaged areas and turn them back into productive farming land to improve food production and community livelihoods.
He said the organization is working together with Friends of Liberia to introduce modern farming methods that can help communities grow healthy and nutritious food despite environmental challenges.
“We are introducing modern, climate-smart agricultural practices and ecological restoration techniques to empower local families to adapt to environmental shifts and grow sufficient, nutritious food,” Mr. Boakai stated.
He added that the first phase of the project will target a few affected communities in Bong County, where residents will begin agriculture activities aimed at protecting land and water resources.
Community members are hopeful that the project will create better farming opportunities, improve food security, and help restore damaged environments for future generations.
